BTHFST Low Loft Bed Twin Size with Stairs, Black

One item rather than a set. We give black. Overall size is around 78 x 55 x 41.5 inches on our own figures. The point of a loft bed is what goes underneath, so measure that space first.

The measurements

These are our published figures for this piece, converted to centimetres alongside. Measure your own space before ordering: 78 by 55 inches is the floor it needs, and 41.5 inches is how far up it goes.

Published dimensions describe the assembled piece. Packaging is larger, and a doorway or stairwell has to take the box as well as the finished item.

What it takes out of the room

The piece itself takes 29.8 square feet. Nobody uses furniture at its own edge, so plan for the space you stand in: leave two feet clear on each side and this piece asks for about 56 square feet.

In a ten by ten room, which is 100 square feet, that leaves roughly 44 square feet for everything else. At 41.5 inches tall it sits below most window sills, so it can usually go under one.

Our room fit calculator does this arithmetic for any room size you type in.

The mattress it takes

It takes a Twin mattress, which you buy separately.

The specification puts the mattress at 6 inches thick or under. On a bunk or loft that is a safety figure rather than a comfort one: a thicker mattress raises the sleeping surface and eats into the guardrail height above it.

What it is made of

Named in this piece's own specification:

  • Steel. The load-bearing part, and what lets a frame carry a sleeper without a heavy timber structure.
  • Fabric. Drawer boxes and bins rather than structure, so it saves weight where nothing is carried.

This is the material list for this item.

What it holds

7 drawers. The drawer boxes are fabric, which keeps the weight down and lets them come out for cleaning.

Our storage arithmetic works out what a given number of drawers actually swallows, using the published sizes across the range.

Power and lighting

It carries LED strip lighting, run from a phone app and a remote. Strip lighting decorates rather than lights a task: it will not light a book at the top bunk.

Safety, and what the rule actually says

This piece's specification names guardrails, an anti-tip device to anchor it to the wall, steel slats.

A federal standard covers bunk beds, and few pieces of furniture carry one. The CPSC sets the requirements. A bed counts as a bunk bed once its mattress foundation sits more than 30 inches above the floor. The upper bunk needs two guardrails at least, one of them on each side, and their tops stand at least 5 inches above the mattress. On the open side, the gap between a guardrail end and the nearest bed end stops at 15 inches.

Those numbers are why mattress thickness matters on a bunk: a thick mattress lifts the sleeping surface and steals the 5 inches the rule asks for.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions, and where a child is involved follow the age guidance printed on the product itself. Measuring before you order

You buy furniture for a tight room by the inch, and a photograph tells you nothing about the clearance left over. Our guides work out the footprint, the ceiling a top bunk needs and the load a frame carries.
